ABOUT SRS CERAMICS

Sue Stein is a ceramic artist whose work explores form, texture, and the quiet rhythms of daily practice. She earned her BFA in photography and printmaking from the University of Michigan, and after many years in nonprofit arts management, found her way to the field of American craft.

For over two decades, Stein was co-owner of Fire Opal, a contemporary craft gallery in Brookline rooted in community and handmade work. She came to ceramics later in life, embracing the freedom to explore the medium without constraint.

Stein's practice centers on texture, shape, and form, allowing for an evolving dialogue between intention and discovery. While her early work focused on wheel throwing, she has increasingly incorporated handbuilding techniques, creating a dynamic interplay between structure and spontaneity. This combination reflects both an attention to natural forms and an openness to the meditative repetition of making.

Working from her home studio in Roslindale, Massachusetts, Stein approaches clay as a daily ritual. From throwing and trimming to surface decoration, each step offers a distinct way of engaging with the material. Her work often balances the line between object and function, with handmade dinnerware holding a special place — pieces intended to be used, shared, and woven into the rituals of everyday life.

Her work can be found at Fire Opal in Brookline and at e. drumm designs in Acton, and has been featured in numerous juried exhibitions.

The Handmade Difference

Every piece from SRS Ceramics is made entirely by hand in Sue's Roslindale studio. No two pieces are identical — slight variations in form, texture, and glaze are the natural result of working with clay, and part of what makes each piece its own. From the first pull on the wheel to the final firing, each object carries the marks of its making. These are not just functional objects; they are records of a process, shaped by time, attention, and care.
